The Marble Falls High School football team will travel to play San Antonio Brackenridge at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at San Antonio Independent School District Sports Complex.

Both teams are entering the contest with identical 1-2 records.

Brackenridge has a new head coach, Steve Garcia, who took over the program in March 2025. He previously was the defensive coordinator at San Antonio Lanier, his alma mater, for five years and served as the and baseball head coach since 2022. During that time, Lanier won football district titles in 2020 and 2021.

“His kids play hard, and they do a good job,” Mustangs head coach Keri Timmerman said. “On film, coaches are passionate, they’re fighting for wins.”

During the Eagles’ only win — a 39-29 victory against Corpus Christi King Sept. 5 — they used a balanced offensive attack that generated 342 yards of total offense. They scored two offensive touchdowns in the second quarter, but the highlight was a 95-yard interception return for a score by senior free safety Anthony Ward that led to a 19-7 lead at the intermission.

Senior quarterback Joseph Delgado completed 13 of 16 passes for 181 yards with a touchdown and had 11 carries for 40 yards, which included a 36-yard scoring scamper. Senior athlete Michael Canizales had five rushes for 83 yards, which included a 75-yard rushing touchdown, and seven receptions for 120 yards. Junior running back Cruz Castillo had 17 rushes for 38 yards and a score. Senior receiver David Prado had two receptions for 43 yards.

Brackenridge had 11 first downs, 33 rushes for 161 yards and completed 13 of 17 passes for 181 yards.

But King quarterback Tatum Emerson completed 17 of 40 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. Damon Smith caught 11 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown.

During the 36-0 victory against Brackenridge Sept. 13, the San Antonio LEE Volunteers committed to their rushing attack that produced 194 yards and five touchdowns from 43 carries. Junior running back Tahrie Chandler had 19 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Zachary Talamantes had 10 carries for 41 yards and two scores.

Meanwhile, Brackenridge had 86 yards of total offense with two interceptions and a fumble.

Marble Falls will rely on defensive end Kaleb Bielfeldt, linebackers Brody Graham and Doak Timmerman and defensive backs Quincy Alexander and Gregory Lemon, who are all seniors, junior linebacker Arnulfo Salazar and sophomore safety Clay Thompson. All have at least 20 tackles this season. Bielfeldt leads the Mustangs with two sacks and six quarterback hurries. Senior defensive back Atreyu Machacek, Lemon and Timmerman each have a fumble recovery. Lemon has caused two fumbles, while Alexander and Salazar each have caused one. Thompson has the team’s only interception.

No matter which side of the ball, the big key remains the same.

“What you’ve got to do with a team like that is you’ve got to control the line of scrimmage,” Timmerman said. “Just managing our front defensively and our back end. Don’t give up. Don’t give big plays. Hold onto the ball and then stop them. I think that’s the focus this week.”

Garcia has said the Eagles will operate a 3-4 defensive front.

Offensively, Marble Falls sophomore quarterback Anderson Liscum will get his second start this week. During the 50-18 to Llano last week, Liscum completed 10 of 31 passes for 174 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. But the majority of completed passes came in the second half. The Mustangs showed more of a rhythm, and he appeared more comfortable.

Timmerman commended the sophomores, including quarterback Crawford Mattox, for their preparation and willingness to play what may be the most scrutinized position in all of sports.

“He shows up and and asks, ‘What do you need me to do?'” the coach said. “He was playing JV football and got varsity reps in scrimmages and we’re like, ‘Hey, by the way, you’re going to be this.’ And he said, ‘Got it. Let’s go.'”

Running backs Joaquin Aguilar, a senior, and Diego Aguilar, a freshman, will handle the majority of the rushing duties. The two are brothers. Doak Timmerman also will enter at running back.

“Between Joaquin and Doak, Diego was not really someone we were wanting to bring up,” the elder Timmerman said. “We really wanted to keep him down on the freshman (squad) and let that freshman class develop with him. But we’ve had some injuries. We’ve had some issues that we just had to.”

The offensive line of Logan Chapa, Madden Hernandez and David Molina, who are juniors, and Tyler Leverett and Raul Moran, who are seniors, will play a big part in the outcome of this game.

“We’re going to see a lot more pressure in places than we’ve seen the past couple of games,” the coach said. “We’ve seen some blitzes here trying to jump the front, and really try to put pressure on you, make you make a mistake. So, we just have to be really simple with the ball and get the ball out on time. Don’t let the flash and the movement and all that keep you from delivering the ball or getting rid of it.”
